The Short Answer
An automatic car can be towed, but not every towing method is safe. If the driven wheels remain on the road for too long, or if the vehicle is moved incorrectly, the transmission can overheat or suffer internal damage.
| Towing method | Safe for automatic cars? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flatbed tow truck | Yes – best option | All four wheels are lifted off the road |
| Wheel-lift tow truck | Sometimes | Depends on vehicle layout and towing distance |
| Two wheels on the road | Risky | Can damage transmission or drivetrain if done incorrectly |
| Being pulled by another car | No | Unsafe and can cause expensive damage |
